THE DEFINITION

What is Kumon Reading Level J?

Kumon Reading Level J (Critique — Character & Theme) is the 24th of 26 levels in the Kumon reading program, where children learn reading becomes judging: students critique character, theme, and authorial choices in substantial literary texts, and every judgement must be paid for with textual evidence. Widely regarded as the toughest transition in the reading programme. It typically aligns with grade 10 (approx. ages 15–16) reading work, though Kumon places children by ability rather than age, so the grade is a guide, not a rule.

Level J builds directly on Reading Level I: Précis & Persuasion and prepares children for Reading Level K: Literary Elements. It is one of 26 Kumon reading levels covered in this independent parent guide series.

This is an independent parent guide, not an official curriculum or placement assessment. Topics and pace can vary; your child's instructor can confirm their current work.
