THE DEFINITION

What is Kumon Reading Level I?

Kumon Reading Level I (Précis & Persuasion) is the 23rd of 26 levels in the Kumon reading program, where children learn the summit of summarising and the doorway to critique: précis (the most condensed faithful summary), argument structure, and persuasive texts — speeches, advertising, political writing — summarised without losing their stance. It typically aligns with grades 9–10 (approx. ages 14–16) reading work, though Kumon places children by ability rather than age, so the grade is a guide, not a rule.

Level I builds directly on Reading Level HII: Multi-Paragraph Summaries and prepares children for Reading Level J: Critique — Character & Theme. It is one of 26 Kumon reading levels covered in this independent parent guide series.

This is an independent parent guide, not an official curriculum or placement assessment. Topics and pace can vary; your child's instructor can confirm their current work.

  • Précis writing

MAKE THE THINKING VISIBLE

How do I help my child with Level I?

Read one passage together, then let your child try the next one alone. A few small exercises to try together — let your child attempt each one first, then use these prompts when they need a nudge.

EXAMPLE 01A parent walkthrough

Write a précis of a three-paragraph speech excerpt

  1. Say: Extract the claim, the two supports, and the conclusion.

  2. Say: Compress to about a quarter of the length, in your own words.

  3. Say: Keep the speaker's stance intact — a précis never argues back.

FINAL ANSWER

A quarter-length précis in own words

EXAMPLE 02A parent walkthrough

Find the claim and the evidence in an advertisement paragraph

  1. Say: The claim: what they want you to believe.

  2. Say: The evidence: what they offer as proof.

  3. Say: Name the emotional appeal too — it is doing work.

FINAL ANSWER

Claim + evidence + appeal identified

SUPPORT, NOT PRESSURE

How can parents support Level I?

Short, calm, and daily beats long and pressured. These small habits make Level I stick — pick one and start tonight.

Précis is unfamiliar to most parents — learn it alongside your child rather than faking it

The stance must survive compression; a précis that neutralises the author has failed

Discuss real speeches and ads at home — they're this level's raw material
