THE DEFINITION

What is Kumon Reading Level BI?

Kumon Reading Level BI (Subject, Predicate & Modifiers) is the 9th of 26 levels in the Kumon reading program, where children learn sentences get longer and richer: children identify subject and predicate in sentences with modifiers, and meet irregular verbs, pronouns, prepositions, and irregular plurals. It typically aligns with grade 2 (approx. ages 7–8) reading work, though Kumon places children by ability rather than age, so the grade is a guide, not a rule.

Level BI builds directly on Reading Level AII: Story Sequence & Retelling and prepares children for Reading Level BII: Context Clues & Main Ideas. It is one of 26 Kumon reading levels covered in this independent parent guide series.

This is an independent parent guide, not an official curriculum or placement assessment. Topics and pace can vary; your child's instructor can confirm their current work.
