THE DEFINITION

What is Kumon Math Level I?

Kumon Math Level I (Factoring & Quadratics) is the 14th of 21 levels in the Kumon math program, where children learn factoring polynomials, square roots, and quadratic equations. It typically aligns with grade 9 schoolwork, though Kumon places children by ability rather than age, so the grade is a guide, not a rule.

Level I builds directly on Math Level H: Linear Equations and prepares children for Math Level J: Advanced Quadratics. It is one of 21 Kumon math levels covered in this independent parent guide series.

This is an independent parent guide, not an official curriculum or placement assessment. Topics and pace can vary; your child’s instructor can confirm their current work.

  • Factor x² + 5x + 6
  • Simplify square roots
  • Solve quadratics by factoring
  • Expand with FOIL
  • Complete the square (intro)

How do I help my child with Level I?

Work through one example together, then let your child try the next one alone. A few small problems to try together — let your child attempt each first, then use these prompts when they need a nudge.

EXAMPLE 01A parent walkthrough

Factor: x² + 7x + 12

  1. Show them: Find two numbers that multiply to 12 and add to 7: 3 and 4

  2. Say: Write (x + 3)(x + 4)

  3. Say: Check by expanding

FINAL ANSWER

(x + 3)(x + 4)

EXAMPLE 02A parent walkthrough

Solve: x² - 9 = 0

  1. Show them: Add 9: x² = 9

  2. Say: Take square root of both sides

  3. Say: x = 3 or x = -3

FINAL ANSWER

x = ±3

SUPPORT, NOT PRESSURE
